Shellac is thinner

Shellac is not a different product from gel polish, it is a brand name. CND Shellac was one of the first hybrid gel-polish systems, and the name became so popular that many people now use “shellac” to mean “gel nails” the same way people say “Hoover” for vacuum cleaners.

What Is Shellac?

Shellac is a specific brand of hybrid nail colour made by CND (Creative Nail Design). It was launched in 2010 and was revolutionary at the time, the first product to combine the ease of nail polish application with the durability and shine of gel. It is cured under UV/LED light and removes with acetone.

Since Shellac's launch, hundreds of other brands have released equivalent hybrid gel-polish systems: OPI GelColor, Gelish, Bio Seaweed Gel, Orly, and many more. They all work on the same principle.

Does It Matter Which Brand a Salon Uses?

For most clients, no. The brand of gel polish matters far less than the skill of the technician applying it. What you should pay attention to is:

  • Prep quality: Proper cuticle work and nail surface prep determines how long any gel polish lasts.
  • Curing time: Under-cured gel lifts and chips early. Your tech should not rush the lamp time.
  • Removal method: Gel should be soaked, not peeled. Peeling damages the nail plate.

When to Upgrade Beyond Gel Polish

Gel polish and Shellac are colour treatments only, they do not add structural strength to the nail. If you have weak or brittle nails, constantly break nails, or want longer nails than your natural length, consider upgrading to:

  • BIAB, strengthening overlay for natural nail growth
  • Gel-X, soft gel extensions for length
  • Hard Gel, sculpted extensions for extreme shapes

The Bottom Line

When a salon advertises “shellac nails” they almost certainly mean gel polish, either genuine CND Shellac or a generic equivalent. The products perform identically in practice. If you're happy with gel polish durability (2-3 weeks) and want a colour-only treatment, it doesn't matter which brand your salon uses. Focus on the technician's prep and application skills instead.
