Gel-X is a soft gel nail extension system created by Après Nail that has become one of the most popular extension methods in the US. Unlike acrylics or hard gel, Gel-X uses pre-shaped, full-cover tips bonded with gel, no acrylic, no odour, no drill required for application.

How Does Gel-X Work?

Gel-X uses pre-shaped soft gel tips that come in dozens of sizes and shapes. The technician selects the correct size for each nail, applies a gel base coat to the natural nail, adheres the tip using Après Nail's bonding gel, and cures the whole thing under a UV/LED lamp. The result is a full-coverage extension that looks identical to the natural nail growing from the cuticle.

  • Pre-shaped tips eliminate sculpting time, application is fast (45-60 min)
  • Full soft gel construction, flexible, lightweight, no monomer smell
  • Cured under LED lamp, not air-cured like acrylic
  • Removed by soaking in acetone, no drill needed

How Long Does Gel-X Last?

Gel-X extensions typically last 3-5 weeks. Because the entire extension is soft gel, they are soak-off removable. Many clients get a fresh full set every 4-6 weeks rather than fills, though some technicians do offer Gel-X fills.

Gel-X vs BIAB

These two are often confused but serve different purposes. BIAB is an overlay, it strengthens the natural nail and adds a small amount of length. Gel-X is a full extension, it adds significant length using a pre-shaped tip. If you want your natural nail length with extra strength, choose BIAB. If you want to add 5-15mm of length, choose Gel-X.

What Shapes Can You Get With Gel-X?

Après Nail makes Gel-X tips in over 10 shapes including square, almond, coffin, stiletto, oval, and short versions of each. The pre-shaped nature of the tips means the shape is built in, no filing from scratch required. This produces very consistent results between appointments.

How Much Does Gel-X Cost?

A full Gel-X set typically costs $65-$120 in the US, depending on city, salon, and nail art added. London pricing is typically £50-£90. Gel-X is generally priced similarly to hard gel extensions and slightly higher than acrylics.

Is Gel-X Worth It?

For most clients wanting extensions, Gel-X is the best all-round option. The lack of acrylic smell, lightweight feel, low nail damage risk, and soak-off removal make it easier to maintain and better for nail health than traditional acrylics. The main limitation is that it requires a technician trained specifically in the Gel-X system.
