Chrome nails are one of the most requested nail finishes of the last several years, and for good reason. The mirror-like metallic effect looks expensive, photographs beautifully, and can be applied over almost any gel colour. Here's everything you need to know.
What Are Chrome Nails?
Chrome nails are created by rubbing an extremely fine metallic powder onto a tacky gel top coat. The powder bonds to the sticky surface and creates a mirror or metallic effect. The nails are then sealed with a non-wipe top coat to protect the chrome.
Chrome is not a nail polish, it is a finishing technique that can be applied over gel polish, BIAB, hard gel extensions, or Gel-X. It is an add-on, not a standalone treatment.
Types of Chrome Finish
- Silver chrome: The classic mirror-finish. Appears almost liquid-metal on the nail.
- Gold chrome: A warm, luxurious metallic gold, popular for events and weddings.
- Rose gold chrome: A soft pink-gold tone. One of the most popular chrome colours.
- Holographic chrome: Catches light and produces a rainbow iridescent effect. Differs from flat metallic.
- Glazed donut chrome: A sheer, milky chrome over a nude or white base, popularised by Hailey Bieber in 2022. Less intense mirror, more pearlescent.
- Black chrome / gunmetal: A dark metallic used for dramatic, editorial looks.

How Are Chrome Nails Applied?
The process depends on the chrome type, but the standard method is:
- Apply and cure a base gel colour (black, nude, or white are most common)
- Apply a gel top coat and cure briefly, leave it tacky (do not fully cure)
- Rub chrome powder onto the tacky surface using a silicone applicator or sponge
- Seal with a non-wipe top coat to prevent the chrome from rubbing off
The whole process adds approximately 10-20 minutes to a standard gel manicure appointment.
How Long Do Chrome Nails Last?
Chrome nails last as long as the underlying gel, typically 2-4 weeks. The chrome effect can dull or scratch slightly before the gel itself lifts. Using a quality non-wipe top coat and avoiding harsh chemicals (cleaning products, acetone) extends the chrome's life.
How Much Do Chrome Nails Cost?
Chrome is usually an add-on charge on top of your gel manicure. Expect to pay an additional £8-£20 / $10-$25 for chrome powder application. A full chrome manicure (gel polish + chrome) typically costs £35-£65 / $45-$75.
Chrome Nail Tips
Chrome shows every imperfection in the nail surface, bumps, ridges, and uneven gel will all be magnified by the mirror finish. Make sure your technician buffs the gel smooth before applying chrome, and that the base colour is fully cured before the chrome step.
For the best chrome result, choose a technician who specifically lists chrome nails in their portfolio. The technique looks simple but requires a practised hand.
